Video Log

This is a log of short videos I have made since starting this site in January 2010. Most include sailing and time-lapse videos of varying sorts.

These videos are a learn-by-doing-in-public kind of craft. As such, they may seem more strange than coherent. I am beginning to see them as a sort of external corpus callosum; connecting right brain to left, experience to logic right here on a screen- staring back at me.

Creating all of these videos have been great exercises in discovering the value of integrating descriptive means and effort into creative and interactive events in my life. All these endeavor to tell a story- to others and, like I said, to each of my other halves….

Getting to the Point

Footage Dates: August, 2010
Post Date: August 30th, 2010
Music Credit: Iron and Wine – “Peng 33”
Included in Post:  Getting to the Point
Length: 5:56

Notes: Summer of 2010 movement into uncertainy: hiking, hitchhiking, and driving in California, sailing single-handed in Washington State. The movement, events, and anticipation of an upcoming offshore sailing passage from Washington to California instilled in me a deep awareness and ultimate appreciation for uncertainty. The experiences may have even taught me to harness uncertainty to some extent.
Much of the film is time lapse animations: Sailing and scenery circa Orcas, Skull, Waldron, Sucia and Patos Islands, WA. Hiking, driving, and planting peppers circa Covelo, CA. Most imagery taken with Pentax WS80.
The voice in the beginning is from a book on tape by Ekhart Tolle, “A New Earth”

Leaving Green Isles and Al Green’s Leaving

Footage Dates: July, 2010
Post Date: July 21st, 2010
Music Credit: Al Green – “Tired of Being Alone”
Included in Post:  Leaving Green Isles and Al Green’s Leaving
Length: 4:21

Notes: Summer 2010 maintenance aboard s/v Bruja Dulce at Cayou Quay Marina on Orcas Island leading to my initial weekend single-handed sailing voyages to nearby Waldron, Stuart, and Jones Islands. Al Green song “Tired of Being Alone” gets stuck in my head for more than one month. Leave Orcas, drive to California, Live Power Farm, all-the-while making this video in an homeopathic effort to release the grip of Al Green’s refrain.
Primarily made with time-lapse sequences of the afore mentioned activities.
Song is the afore mentioned refrain.

Gifts and Curses

Footage Dates: April 8th, 2010
Post Date: April 19th, 2010
Music Credit: Damien Rice – “Cannonball”
Included in Post:  Gifts and Curses
Length: 5:18

Notes: Strange, in general. Memes, but dandelions. All film and photographs were taken on one of four days: 3 days picking dandelions, and one day driving over the Cascades to Wenatchee and back.

Victoria the 1st

Footage Dates: September 20th-27th, 2007
Post Date: March 27th, 2010
Music Credit:  Mozart – “Eine Kleine Nachtmusik”
Included in Post:  Victoria the 1st
Length: 4:55

Notes: Sailing. Whales. Strange video and music editing. Fun with family.

Dockton Stoking

Footage Dates: January and February, 2010
Music Credit:  John Butler Trio – “Better Than”
Included in Post:  Not Docked in Dockton – Stoking
Length: 4:24

Notes: Winter at anchor, 100 yards off the dock in Dockton (Vashon Island), WA. Stoking the stove aboard s/v Bruja Dulce, which has trouble burning b99 biodiesel. Stoking plans for the coming summer’s journey at sea, and stoking ideas reaching deep into my black Moleskine notebooks.

Leaving Leschi

Footage Date: January 3rd, 2010
Music Credit: Josh Ritter – “Leaving”
Included in Post: Leaving Leschi
Length: 3:22

Notes: Short video- very basic- mostly time-lapse and video from the quiet morning motoring away from the Leschi neighborhood of Seattle on Lake Washington for the last time.
